Jahan Gerrard was born in the USSR, and is now based in the UK. Her upbringing in an artistic household has shaped both her inspirations and her career. The creativity of her parents (father an artist and mother a weaver) had a huge impact on her visual awareness. Having studied music first, she started drawing and painting later, after moving to England.
Jahan Gerrard’s work is versatile, spontaneous and always evolving. In an intensive process and dialogue between the artist and the work, the paintings are created to capture the moment, movement and feeling of an inner world and reality.
My approach to painting is physical and spontaneous. Using layers, markmaking and brushstrokes, exploring the surfaces and the possibilities of paint and colour, I’m interested in finding out something unknown. Paintings like thoughts and feelings come in fragments of moments of inspiration and imagination.
