About the artist

Scottish Visual Artist Born 1973

The central theme of my work is the subjective human reaction to being in a particular place at a certain point in time. It explores the interactions between our minds, our emotional states, and the place we are in. My work addresses to what extent the perceived atmosphere of a place is, in fact, a projection of self.

My creative process involves recognising and recording the shifting nature of my own emotional states and responses to the location, as much as describing the physical reality of the place itself. I use studies and sketches, video recording, analogue photography, as well as written fragments of prose and poetry; these elements help to form my finished work but are not included in it.

From these information sources, gathered in the field, begins a studio process of distillation; reality is edited until a recognisable truth is evident in the emerging work. The resulting works range from realism to non-figurative abstraction, depending on what derives from the process. I work with dry media and paint on canvas, paper, and board supports.

My concerns for the issues around environmental destruction underpin much of the art I create. By exploring the deep connections we have with the world around us I hope to express how precious that world is, to us as collective humanity and to me as an individual.
